The Elk Rut, September 2022
I had never witnessed the elk rut until this fall! Bull elk will chase cows around to mate, and will call to other elk to challenge them or claim a territory. Occasionally, bulls will fight, but I did not see any of that on this specific excursion. I saw this harem in the Moraine Park area of Rocky Mountain National Park. I had to arrive before sunrise to scope out a good spot, and then I waited for the elk to emerge. I was fortunate enough to see these ones as dawn was breaking.
